Bill died on Friday, September 4,2020 at his home on Turtle Lake in Shoreview. He was born on August 20, 1935 in Minneapolis to Selmer and Goldie Swanson. Playing sports at Minneapolis North High School, he earned All-City honors in hockey and baseball. Bill "Sweet Pea" then went to the University of Minnesota to play both sports. He was a long time St. Paul schoolteacher and coach. He enjoyed coaching his sons' sports teams, family skiing, time at Lake Saganaga and watching sports. Bill was most content fixing cars in the driveway with one of his many dogs by his side. Lovingly survived by his wife, Helen (Yoerks) of Shoreview, son Dave (Pam) of Eagan, grandchildren McCale (Danielle) Swanson of Camp Pendleton, CA and Kinsey Swanson of Eagan; son Rick (Tim) of Waitsfield, Vermont, many nieces and nephews and his dog Maya. He was preceded in death by his parents Selmer and Goldie Swanson and brothers Bob (Yvonne) Swanson, Don (Bev) Swanson. Family graveside service will be held at the Episcopal Cemetery in White Bear Lake. A post-COVID-19 celebration of life will be planned. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Animal Humane Society, or donor's choice.
