Obituary

William David Kimmel, 74, died Wednesday, April 29th, 2015 at Good Samaritan Society in Inver Grove Heights after bravely enduring terminal pancreatic cancer. Bill was born in Cumberland, Wisconsin on October 19th, 1940 to Anna and Edward Kimmel. He lived in St. Paul's West Side for most of his youth, but fondly recalled many days spent at his uncles' farm in Wisconsin. Bill developed an interest in engineering at a young age. He recounted how his 4th grade teacher would let him read from her library after he finished his school work. He spent many hours devouring the books there, which included science fiction classics like Heinlein's Rocket Ship Galileo. After graduating from Humboldt High School in 1958, Bill studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He met his wife Sharon on campus at the Coffman Memorial Union building through mutual friends. They were married in 1962, and he completed his bachelor's in Engineering a year later. Bill was employed by Sperry Univac (later Unisys) for over 20 years, working on computer systems for the military. Always interested in teaching, he jumped at the opportunity to teach night classes at the Dakota County Technical College in 1976. When they needed additional teachers, he talked his colleague Daryl Gerke into joining him. Before long, this work expanded into EMI (electromagnetic interference) related consulting assignments and Kimmel Gerke and Associates (KGA) was born. After several years of "moonlighting," Bill and Daryl quit their day jobs and began a full-time partnership that lasted over 25 years. Bill was passionate about his KGA business. He loved helping his clients - figuring out what was causing their interference problems and designing a solution. He continued to teach seminars, ultimately helping educate thousands of engineers on EMI issues. He also penned almost 200 articles on the topic, as well as co-authored three books. He was a prominent contributor to the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and helped found the MN EMC Event, a one-day EMC show held in the Twin Cities for over thirty years. While he loved his work, Bill was also devoted to his family, and a proud father and grandfather. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Sharon, with Disney World and Hawaii being special (and often visited) destinations. They also enjoyed attending musicals or seeing his favorite musical group, The Barbary Coast Dixieland Band. In addition, Bill had a life-long love of reading and devoured hundreds of books on a variety of topics, both fiction and non-fiction. Bill will be remembered for his hard work, his dedication to family, his mentoring, his passion for learning, and his collegiality. He good naturedly declared himself to be a bit of a curmudgeon and a cynic, but underneath it all he had a great deal of sensitivity and kindness for others. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Sharon, children Susan (Myles Shaver) Kimmel and Eric (Melissa) Kimmel; grandchildren Noah, Caroline, Jay, Russell and Jacob; and brother Edward (Carole) Kimmel.
