Obituary

Norman Edwin Sell, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, went to his heavenly home on August 14, 2022. Norman was a faithful man who loved the Lord, his family, church, and his community.

Norm was born to parents Edwin and Dorothy Sell, on October 11, 1948, in St. Paul, MN. He was baptized on October 31, 1948 and confirmed on April 15, 1962. A favorite childhood pastime included spending time on his grandfather's farm, playing in the fields with his siblings and cousins. Many of the stories seemed to include caterpillars, skunks or raccoons.

Norm graduated from Rosemount High School in 1966, and received an Accounting Degree from Rasmussen Business College in 1969. He enlisted in the United States Army on August 15, 1969 and served until April 6, 1972. He was honorably discharged on July 1, 1975. He served in Viet Nam and Germany. Later in life, Norm was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at the age of 48; this was later attributed to his role in handling Agent Orange during his time in the service. Despite the health challenges he experienced, Norm was incredibly proud to have been of service to his country.

Norm married his former wife, Barbara (Weiss) Sell, in 1970, and they welcomed their first child, Jennifer, to the world in 1971 while Norm was serving in Germany. After returning to the United States, they welcomed son, Stephen, in 1976, and daughter, Megan, in 1985. Norm was a dedicated employee at Land O'Lakes for 25 years. In addition to his full-time job, he worked hard raising produce on his small family hobby farm in Forest Lake, MN, to provide extra income for his family. Countless Saturdays were spent at the St. Paul Farmer's Market selling produce, followed by lunch at McDonald's on the way home from market.

Apart from working and raising his family, Norm was an avid MN sports fan and loved the Twins, the Vikings, the Timberwolves, and the Wild. He enjoyed participating in the annual Sell family fantasy football league, where he never won because he always faithfully drafted Vikings players who undoubtedly let him down at the end of each season. He was a collector of many things including coins, baseball cards, Coca Cola memorabilia, and display items for his Christmas Village, which he often kept up year round much to the chagrin of his children. He loved music, particularly Neil Diamond, and travelling with his family, though he was not able to travel as much as he would've liked due to his Parkinson's diagnosis.

Norm was a big kid at heart. He loved to laugh and tease people. He was known for his friendliness and was often the "favorite" resident in assisted living due to his cheerful attitude and can do spirit. He never let his challenges with Parkinson's keep him from enjoying the things he loved doing and the people he enjoyed spending time with. He battled Parkinson's with the most amazing grace, bravery and strength. He lived everyday with positivity and determination and refused to let the disease keep him from enjoying the people and actvities he loved.

Norm is survived by his children Jennifer (Bret) Matzke, Stephen (Nicole) Sell, and Megan von Lange and her fiancé Sam Callegari; his 6 grandchildren: Josh (Lauren), Jake, Araeya and Hannah Sell, and Noah and Ella Matzke; siblings Jerry (Annette), Ray (Mary Jo), Sheila (Ryan) Ruckheim.  He is predeceased by his parents Dorothy and Edwin Sell.
