Mary Kutcher Salisbury – A Life Remembered
Mary Kutcher Salisbury was born on September 27, 1950, in Chamberlain, South Dakota, to Joseph and Eileen Kutcher. She was one of six siblings, growing up in a family shaped by strong values, and an encouragement to seek knowledge and adventure. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Bloomington, Minnesota, in 1968, delivering the commencement speech to her class. Her love of language and learning led her to Germany for a year as an exchange student, and then the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, graduating in 1973.
Mary's life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with schizophrenia, a challenge that reshaped her path but never dimmed her spirit. She was a gifted artist, a meticulous writer, and a person who found deep meaning in small, intentional connections. Despite her struggles, she built a life of resilience and love, marrying David Salisbury in 1988. She found fulfillment through volunteering, relationships, and her deep personal commitment to self-improvement.
After decades of navigating both illness and independence, Mary spent her final years in the care of Minnehaha Senior Living, where she found peace, stability, and community. She died on February 10, 2025, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, surrounded by the network of care and compassion that had sustained her for so long.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Peter, beloved husband, David, and her brother-in-law Eric Stechmann. She is survived by her siblings—Kathy Stechmann, Joli Fleming (Tom), Steve Kutcher, Greg Kutcher (Muara Randall), and Louise Eise (John)—as well as many treasured nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
Mary's life was one of perseverance, deep reflection, and an unwavering commitment to connection. Her legacy is one of strength, creativity, and the deep love she held for those around her.
