Obituary

Age 92 Born June 8, 1921 St Paul Minnesota Died March 18, 2014 Bloomington, Minnesota Preceded in death by beloved husband Albert, son Michael Stephen (twin to Daria), and sisters Marie and Joan. Survived by children Geraldine Thiltgen, Daria Gagnon (husband Raymond), Pamela Thiltgen-Hester, Mark Thiltgen (wife Linda), grandchildren Christopher, Pauline, Craig, Virginia, Cody, Hollie, Riley, Denver and Dustin, and great grandchildren Emerson, Sawyer, Dillan, Antonio, Marco, Raina, Myra, and Hannah. Loyola graduated from St Joseph's Academy (1939) and the College of St Catherine (1943, BA, Kappa Gamma Pi). She worked as an Air Intelligence Specialist in Washington DC (1943-1945). In 1946 she married Albert and they settled on a farm outside of Centerville, Minnesota. In 1954 she earned a MA in Political Science from the University of Minnesota. Loyola taught at Archbishop Murray Memorial High School for several years and joined Anoka Ramsey Community College as an instructor in 1965. Her education and awards included fellowships at Macalester College and Purdue University, and Institutes at UCLA and the University of Minnesota. In 1970 she was voted an outstanding Educator of America. She pioneered the Introduction to Women's Studies course in 1985. In 1991 she retired and received the Distinguished Faculty Emeritus Award. In retirement she continued to study history, economics, and current affairs. Loyola served the community in many ways, as a member of the school board, the church council, the Lino Lakes Village Planning Commission, and as Third Congressional District DFL chairwoman. Loyola and Albert took family vacations all over the US and Canada, including Yellow Stone Park, Mesa Verde National Park, Washington DC, the Seattle World's Fair and the New York World's Fair. Later travels included Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Loyola's grandchildren fondly remember their birthdays being very special because Grandma made them a from-scratch devil's food cake with whipped egg white frosting and colored sprinkles. She also taught them how to sit properly at the dinner table and how to thoroughly wash dishes at the sink. Memorials preferred to Loyola Thiltgen scholarship funds at St Catherine University and Anoka-Ramsey Community College.
