John Scott Austin
70 years young
Dear John, in celebration of your life, thank you for the years you shared with me/us. You are forever loved and missed. I had been searching for "someone (exactly) like you" and I thank God for giving me 18 wonderful years with the love of my life.
Born and raised on the Westside of St Paul. Graduated from Humboldt high school 1968. USMC 1968-1970, serving at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. He was a proud veteran. Attended Augsburg College, completing his masters in social work. Retired from his career as a domestic abuse counselor and educator in 2009.
Preceded in death by parents, Florene (Scott) and Donald, and sister, Sally. Survived by soulmate and wife, Rita (nee Chamberlin); siblings Barb (Bill) Hathaway, Jeff (Elizabeth), Andy (Marcy), and Jenny (John) Kobinski, as well as Rita's siblings/spouses whom he had a close relationship: Ann/Bruce Bonkalski, Lisa, and Rod/Glenna, along with many nieces, nephews and extended family. John enjoyed the companionship of both dogs and cats throughout his life. He is survived by felines, Lil'Mo and Baby Boy whom he loved dearly.
John is remembered for his generosity and caring heart, as well as deep devotion to his faith in the love of God. He was gregarious, and could start up a conversation with anyone. He was genuinely interested in others and held a deep love for family and friends. His love of music sustained him through hard times and good, especially traditional spiritual hymns during years of kidney treatment that provided needed solace. In spite of several health challenges, John always kept his sense of humor and loving spirit. These memories and more will keep us in the days ahead.
The families want to thank all the VA medical staff who have cared for John over the years, as well as Hennepin Home Health Care and North Memorial Hospice.
