Obituary

Beloved husband of 62 years, dad and grandpa, George was born April 15, 1925, in Madelia, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mildred (Morris) Miller. He is survived by his wife, Faye; sons, Thomas (Cheri) of Eagan, David (Cathryn) of Mendota Heights, and James (Laurie) of Saint Peter; five grandchildren, Evan, Chelsea, Joseph, Carl, and David; and brother-in-law Wayne (Margaret) Flohrs of Fairmont. He was baptized on Dec. 12, 1925, and confirmed on March 27, 1938, at First Presbyterian Church of Madelia.

George was an Eagle Scout and active in school and church. He graduated from Madelia High School in 1943. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served for over two years. While stationed in England, he flew the B-17 as co-pilot. When the war ended, he flew prisoner-of-war missions from Germany back to Paris. Following his honorable discharge, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota. While there, he studied the Lutheran faith and was confirmed at University Lutheran Chapel on May 28, 1948.

George married Faye Flohrs on June 20, 1948, at Galena Lutheran Church in southern Minnesota. Their first summer was spent working at Itasca State Park. In 1950, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in chemical engineering. George's first job was with Goodyear in Ohio. While there, he found some arrowheads in a nearby plowed field! He was an avid hunter of agates and scoured many gravel pits with his boys while living in Minnesota.

Having canoed with the scouts, he decided to build one himself. He and Faye made many week-long BWCA trips in his red canoe. There was never a day that George couldn't start a fire, even in the rain. Even after portaging became too hard, they still enjoyed the lakes in the North Country for many years. They also enjoyed many travels around the country and overseas, including visits to their sons living in other states and visits to all his B-17 crew in various places.

George was very good at woodworking and left his talent with the family in different ways. He enjoyed doing wood finishing projects at Saint James where he served in different capacities. He pursued many interests after his retirement from 3M in 1989, including golfing and fishing. A month on the Gulf Coast each year was a much-anticipated break from the winter weather. George and Faye enjoyed 62 years of marriage with many blessings of good health and wonderful family.

George was a good, kind man. He loved the Lord. He will be missed.

George's family wishes to thank the staff at Inver Glen and Saint Jude Hospice for the compassionate care they gave to George in his last days.
