St. Paul

Obituary

Gary R. Mahre, age 78, of St. Paul died on Monday, March 21, 2022.  He is survived by his wife, Patricia. Predeceased are Gary's parents, brother and brother's wife, Nancy (Sievert).

Gary was born in St. Paul to Edith Johnson Mahre and Emil and joined his brother, Ronald. Before Gary entered the first grade, his family moved to a farm by Rush City.  During thier stay in Rush Gary and Ronald attended country school. His family moved back to St. Paul just before his senior year of high school.  Following high school he completed trade school and became a draftsman for a few years.  Shortly, thereafter he enlisted in the army seeking change and adventure. His infantry tour of duty was in Vietnam during the war.  He did not talk about his war years.  After completing military service he enrolled and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a math major.  He commented that while he was in the service he looked around and saw the enlisted men were doing the dirty jobs. "Let that be a lesson about life".

His first job following college was at NSA and he was not allowed to talk about that either.  His work career involved creating expansive menus getting the computer to run a specific task or function related to business forms, or machine tooling etc.   He was involved in computer programming in the early stages when the disks were bigger than dinner plates.
We met at a downhill ski club.  Both of us were cross country skiers.  Gary had completed the Birkebeiner (a 35 mile cross country ski race) from Hayward, WS to Telemark Lodge at Cable WS.  We married and shortly thereafter Gary was planning cross country ski trips to county parks and local places.  Gary loved to see what was around every corner.  We also cross country skied on some downhill courses.   I'm proud
to say I also completed the entire Birkebeiner.
Gary planned vacation trips for us all over the world.  The only continent we did not set foot on was Antarctica. We each loved our trip to Egypt the most.  Gary had a subtle sense of humor, was well read and fun to be around.  I shall miss him greatly!
