Faye Lavon
Miller
Mar 12, 1927 — Sep 18, 2018
Faye was born in Waverly Township of southern Minnesota. She was baptized on April 3, 1927, and confirmed on March 17, 1940, at Galena Lutheran Church near Ormsby, MN. Faye spent her early years on the family farm, attended a one-room schoolhouse for eight years, and car-pooled nine miles to Truman High School where she was active in plays and with the school paper. She roomed in town the last two years, which was common at the time since there were no school buses.
Faye met George Miller in 1944 when he was on furlough from the Army Air Corps. Their romance lasted through four years of letter writing. While he was in the service, Faye attended Saint Olaf College. Upon her graduation, they were married on June 20, 1948, at Galena Lutheran Church. They spent their first summer working at Itasca State Park. While George attended the University of Minnesota, Faye worked at the Pillsbury Settlement House. Their marriage was blessed: Tom, Dave, and Jim. (Faye had all brothers and sons and, as a self-described tomboy, she could always hold her own among them.) George and Faye loved to travel: fifty states and numerous trips overseas, from Panama and Australia to Greece and Germany. One favorite trip, involving weeks of planning (part of the fun), took them up the Alaska coast via the ferry system. They paddled (and portaged) their way through many week-long canoe trips in the BWCA and a white-water rafting trip on the Salmon River. Each year they enjoyed their month on the Gulf Coast and a break from the winter weather. Faye and George were married for sixty-two years with the Lord's blessings of good health and a family she loved dearly. They joined Saint James Lutheran Church in 1965 where they worshiped together and served for many years.
Faye worked twenty years as assistant librarian at Henry Sibley High School. In her retirement, she volunteered at Gillette Children's Hospital and the Mission for the Visually Impaired. She enjoyed a book club and bridge with church friends for forty years. Knitting needles and a trusty Singer sewing machine were often used by her skillful hands. She rooted for the Twins, to win!
Faye was preceded in death by her husband, George; parents, Rudolph and Erna (Hilgendorf) Flohrs; brother, Kenneth; sisters-in-law, Eunice and Margaret; and grandson, David Michael. She is survived by sons, Thomas (Cheri) of Eagan, David (Cathryn) of Mendota Heights, and James (Laurie) of Saint Peter; brother, Wayne Flohrs of Fairmont; grandchildren, Evan (Jen), Chelsea, Joseph, and Carl; niece, Marcia Huber; nephews, Glen, Bob, and Bill Flohrs.
Faye's disarming candor and Christian love opened hearts. As she studied, moved, worked, and traveled, many children, teenagers, and adults became lifelong friends. She comforted, encouraged, and helped others see the good in this life.
Faye's family wishes to thank the staff and aides at Inver Glen for the compassionate care they gave Faye in her last days as well as the preschoolers and many friends there who were treasured companions for the past eight years.
