Eugene (Gene) Theodore Grolla, 88 of McGregor MN (formally Mendota Heights) passed away peacefully Monday, December 02, 2013. Proceeded in death by parents; Theodore & Edna Grolla, Sister, Delores Gilcher and son, Theodore Grolla. Survived by his beloved wife of 67 years; Phyllis Grolla, Daughter; Edythe (Bunny) Grolla. He is also survived by two grandchildren; JoAnne (Tod) Elling, Sherri (Fritz) Freiderich and four great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Rocky Mount in World War II. He retired after 36 years from the Burlington Northern Railroad (formally Northern Pacific). He and Phyllis loved to travel south over many winters and shared fond memories together. In the summer they enjoyed their summer home that he hand built on Big Sandy Lake, McGregor, MN where friends and family would visit frequently. He was a passionate loving gentleman who would always place a smile on your face. He will always be remembered as a fun loving Spouse, Father, Grandfather and friend to many. He will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. Gene's Memorial service along with his sister Delores Gilcher (3/21/1924 - 6/12/2009) and brother in law Gilbert Gilcher (1/23/1924 - 9/8/2013) will be held Monday, December 9, 2013 at 11AM at St. James Lutheran Church, 460 Annapolis St W, West St. Paul. Visitation Sunday, Dec. 8 from 4-8 at the Johnson-Peterson Funeral Home, 612 S. Smith Avenue, St. Paul, and one hour prior to the service at church. Interment at Fort Snelling following memorial service. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to your favorite charity.
