Obituary

Elizabeth Faye (Schindler) Adams, or "Liz," as she liked to be called, was born on March 6, 1927, at her home at 804 Delaware Avenue, Saint Paul, Minnesota. Her parents were Paul August Schindler and Martha Helene (Schmidt) Schindler. She was baptized at home by a substitute pastor from Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She was confirmed at Saint James Lutheran Church and remained a faithful member for the rest of her life. Liz taught Sunday School and was active in Priscilla's and Ladies Guild, and she loved music. She could always be counted on to chime in on hymns - often literally, since she was a longtime member of the handbell choir.

Liz went to Douglas Elementary School and graduated from Humboldt High School. Some of her favorite memories as a child were of Christmastime: visits from Santa on Christmas Eve and reciting a German poem for a Sunday School Christmas program. She carried this love of the holiday throughout her life, for many years hosting a "cookie party" at her house for her entire extended family.

Liz worked as a stenographer and bookkeeper for P.R.L. Hardenbergh Company after graduating from high school. Later she worked for several years at Fold-Craft Company in Mendota as bookkeeper and cost accountant. She said she enjoyed bookkeeping because "figures always come out right - eventually."

One night when Liz was 18, she went bowling with her friend Lorraine. They started talking to the boys in the next lane. About a year and a half later, on May 10, 1947, Liz married Howard Adams at Saint James (Lorraine ended up marrying one of the other boys). Howie might've been known for his sly tricks, like his ability to "smell aces," but none of them would've worked without Liz by his side, seemingly solemn and innocent, never betraying the subtle clues she was giving him.

Howie and Liz were married for 62 years, and God blessed them with three children: Marge, Ginger, and Steve. They built a home in Mendota Heights where Liz could pursue the knitting and baking she loved to do, and in the process they also built a large circle of friends with whom they enjoyed playing cards and, of course, bowling.

Liz was called home to heaven on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at the age of 90 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howie, and her grandson, Joe Cogger. She is survived by her 1 brother, Roy (Betty) Schindler; her 3 children, Marge Cogger, Ginger (Jim) Walker, and Steve (Amy) Adams; by 4 of her grandchildren, Julie (Robin) Chattopadhyay, Dan (Kristin) Walker, Martin Adams, and Paul Adams; and by her 9 great-grandchildren, Anthony and Sophie Cogger, Riya, Karina, and Ben Chattopadhyay, and Evan, Adam, Nora, and Isaac Walker.

Her descendants are grateful to have Liz's example before us. Louisa May Alcott wrote in Little Women that, "Simple, sincere people seldom speak of their piety. It shows itself in acts rather than in words, and has more influence than homilies or protestations." Liz's influence by that measure will be immense.

A private interment will take place in January at Fort Snelling National Cemetry.
