Obituary

Loving Husband, Dad
Grandpa & Uncle

Donald Fredrick Unruh was born on May 5, 1937 to William and Ella Unruh in St. Paul, MN.   He was the youngest of five children with 12 years separating him from his next closest sibling, Bud.   His older sisters, Myrtle, Arlys and Dolly doted on him as they grew up together in West St. Paul.    Don loved animals while raising horses, pigeons, dogs and rabbits.   After graduating from Henry Sibley High School, he began working at the West St. Paul State Bank where he met Darlene Berfelz.   They were married on September 10, 1960 and were blessed with three children:  Leslee, Shelley and David.      After 48 years in the banking business, he retired (2002) and continued his love of travel with Darlene.  Together they visited 32 countries on five continents; their favorites being two trips to Africa.  Don also loved going to the State Fair and would attend several times each year.   He enjoyed cooking for his family and wondered why Bigfoot has yet to be found.  He loved photographing daylilies and was a longtime member of the Daylily Society of Minnesota.  You could often find him "touring" his yard multiple times each day in July trying to capture that prize winning photo!

Don is survived by his wife, Darlene, children, Leslee (husband Mike), Shelley, David (fiancée Theresa and her children Abby, Nick and Ben) and grandchildren, Haylee, Lauren and Alex, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.  After the birth of Alex, he was fondly referred to as "Papa."  We have been reminded recently that eternity is a long time to spend with the ones we love.  For that we thank God who sent his Son, Jesus, who died for our sins and rose again that we may all spend eternity with Him in heaven.  Auf Wiedersehen, Papa!  Until we meet again in heaven!
