Obituary

Anne Kathryn Gilmore (nee Caleo), 97, died in the early morning hours of 11/12/2019. She is survived by 5 children; Phillip (Amy) Gilmore, Houston, TX; Mary (Will) Richter, Defiance, OH; James (Mary) Gilmore, Dallas, TX; Brian (Terrie) Gilmore, Goodyear, AZ; Judy (Tom) Beniak, North Oaks, MN. Anne also is survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sisters; Marie Dunfee, Las Vegas, NV, and Margaret (Marge) Gilmore, Bloomington, IL; and by two brothers, John Caleo, East Moline IL, and Francis Caleo, Menlo Park, California

Anne was born and grew up in Rock Island, IL. She had an early and avid interest in Nursing, making it a career for 42 years. During World War II she cared for wounded soldiers as a Nursing Student at Moline (IL) Public Hospital. In 1944, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Moline (IL) Public Hospital Nursing Program. Anne worked initially as an Industrial Nurse.

After moving to Chicago, she worked at Little Company of Mary Hospital. She also worked at Christ Hospital, Chicago, IL as a nurse in medicine surgery, oncology, emergency, and psychiatry. Following her time at Christ Hospital, she did private Nursing for the Maravich family of Chicago.

Anne was a dedicated follower of the news. She would read the daily newspaper and news magazines from cover-to-cover. She always listened to the evening news, especially from her beloved WGN. She had an amazing memory for facts and people from the news; one could rely on her for accurate information on current events.

During her later years, when she was less mobile, she was able to watch and listen to religious programming on TV and radio, in addition to daily readings from minister Charles Stanley. When Anne lost her vision, she continued her daily readings by listening to them as they were read to her by her children, Phillip, Mary, and Jim.

Anne had a remarkable ability to talk to anyone and became close in a short time. She met an astronaut and also met the president of Southwest Airlines for example, on two of her trips. Anne loved to be in the swimming pool, so vacations were a thrill for her. She visited Hawaii, Las Vegas, Orlando, Ft Myers, Phoenix, Dallas, and Houston where she was at poolside when she was not sightseeing.

Anne had myriad friends, from young to old. She truly made differences in people's lives, both in Nursing and outside of work. As has been said, "when an elderly person dies, it is like a library burning." This was definitely true for Anne Gilmore. She is and will be missed.
