Obituary

Age 83

of Maplewood, MN

Passed peacefully into eternal life with his Lord Jesus on December 31, 2017 surrounded by his children in the hospital following a brief illness.
Survived by his children Carol (Clifford) Holderness, Daniel, Angela (Daniel Hunter), Matthew (Kristi); dear grandchildren Otto and Maxwell Marckel, George and Anna Holderness, Joshua, Benjamin and Jacob Marckel; also survived by his sisters Catherine Graham Smith and Annette Sandness.
Preceded in death by his parents, George Edward Marckel and Dorothy Marie (nee Melges), Walter Matz (Dorothy's second husband), and his own beloved wife Donna Jane (nee Snyder).
Born October 11, 1934 in Perham, Minnesota, and attended Perham schools.
Amos was an engineer in every sense.  Patient, thoughtful, steadfast, kind and methodical.  He could fix anything and did.  In the U.S. Air Force, he worked on early radar systems, met his future wife in Indiana, and found his profession - electrical engineering - which he studied at the University of Minnesota.  He and Donna were married June 27, 1961.  Upon graduation, he began his career with IBM in Rochester, Minnesota, designing state-of-the-art room - sized computers for businesses.  When IBM formed the Personal Computer division, Amos move with his family to Austin, Texas where he stayed for the remainder of his professional career.  In 2007, he and Donna moved back to Minnesota to live near their children and grandchildren.
Amos was dedicated to his church communities in Rochester (Grace Lutheran), Austin (Redeemer Lutheran) and White Bear Lake (South Shore Trinity), serving at times as head usher, elder, congregation president, and call committee member, though never a choir member.
Amos loved the outdoors.  He was a fisherman, gardener, avid bird feeder and animal observer.  He leaves his family and friends with a greater appreciation of nature's beauty.
Amos also treasured the gentle humor embedded in all parts of his life.  His quiet and dignified manner was a perfect cover for his wry observations, his cheerful skepticism and the joy he found in connecting with people through day-to-day conversations and tasks.
Donations in his memory may be made to South Shore Trinity Lutheran Church of White Bear Lake, MN; CaringBridge.org; or to the charity of your choice.
